Sometimes I've told God, you're going to have to knock me over the head
about something for me to get it. Well... I got one of those knocks
in the head a few weeks ago.
(Aside: In one of the video classes from Charis Bible College, the
instructor was saying that we should always be learning, no matter where
we are. He told the story of being excited and uplifted by a sermon
one day at church. On the way out, he ran into one of the students who
attending the same church. This young man made some statement about
he didn't know why he bothered coming because he didn't hear anything new
and they were learning it all at the Bible College. Linus explained
why this was not the right attitude to have about going to church.)
With the above teaching still in my memory, I was at one of the studies
I attend regularly. My attention began to wander. I found myself
thinking "I've heard this all before." The next thought was "Then why
aren't you doing it?"
Read this any way you want--WHY aren't you doing it? Why AREN'T
you doing it? Why aren't YOU doing it? Why aren't you DOING
it? Why aren't you doing IT?
It still boils down to the same thing. If I have heard all this
before, then supposedly I know (believe and understand). If I know,
then I should be doing.
I had to question myself. What aren't I doing it?
You ask, what is it that Virginia isn't doing? You name it, I'm probably
not doing it. Laugh!!! The point is that the Bible has so meaning
teachings that one doesn't really take to heart.
Proverbs 6:6
We've probably all heard teachings that we should emmulate the industriousness
of the ant.
Proverbs 6:16-19
Have you ever been guilty of one of these several things. I know
I have.
There's the old saying "It's easier said than done." Just like writing
this message. I was so excited about this topic. But three weeks
and a trip are under my belt--and I'm just now writing it. Why do
we procrastinate?
The first excuse is often "not enough time." That can be rephrased
as poor planning of priorities. I've been told that we should discuss our
daily plans with God, asking him to show us which things need to be done
at what time.
In many cases the real reason behind procrastination is fear of failure
and rejection. We are so afraid of not doing it right that it is easier
to put it off and use other excuses for our lack of action. I have
to say that this is one of my problems. I respect Mark that he is good
about doing, instead of putting it off. He says once an unpleasant
task is out of the way, then one can enjoy doing something fun.
The topic today isn't procrastination or fear. The idea is once again
that we should immerse ourselves in the teachings of the Bible. However,
immersing isn't enough. One has to take action. For instance.
We can memorize the seven things that the Lord hates as listed in
Proverbs 6:16-19
; but it doesn't do us much good until we determine to eradicate those
things from our lives. Does that "little white lie" just slip out?
Do we look down our noses at others? Do we ever devise wickedness?
Maybe...
Solomon continues in
Proverbs 6:20-22
that we should keep our father's commandments. He may have been
talking about teachings of human fathers--but he could also be referring
to the teachings of the Bible which is the inspired word of our spiritual
Father. If we have these teachings in our hearts, then they shall
lead us as we go about our daily tasks.
Deuteronomy 6:7-9
speaks of the commandments, statutes and judgments as something to be
physically bound to us and even written on the gates of our house. This
may go a little far; we don't do this today. Because we don't have
to. The principles should be so internalized in our hearts and minds
that we don't stray from the teachings.
I do know that God forgives and it's not by works that I am saved. Therefore,
there is no condemnation. if I should fall short.
Romans 8:1
What a blessing!
However, again, I ask myself, am I really immersing myself in God and His
will for me? The only way I can do this is have a good relationship
with Him. I can do this by prayer and reading the Bible. To
include Him when making decisions. Yielding to his guidance. Then
I know that I am in His Will.
I hope and trust the same for you.
