In Spring 2000, I was having a hard time with my life. We were undergoing
changes at the company. I felt like my job was a thankless task and
no one appreciated what I did. Does that sound familiar?--can all
you mothers out there relate?
Well, to make a long story short, the Holy Spirit put it on my heart that
I wasn't really listening to what people were saying. That I was so
busy with "me" and "my" that I wasn't paying positive attention to others.
And that I really didn't know what they were thinking about me because
I wasn't listening to their words.
I was astounded at the words I heard the next day. I was thanked
for minor things like refilling the paper in the copy machine, I was told
how pretty my dress was, and bunches of other things that I cannot remember
after three years. I felt smacked that I certainly had been wrong
in my assessment that no one liked me.
I also had to question how I was treating others. Was I saying positive,
complimentary things to my coworkers? I have to admit that the answer
was "not most of the time." I've heard that it takes ten positive
"strokes" to offset one negative stroke. In other words, if one negative
thing happens, it takes ten good thing to counteract that one negative thing.
I certainly was being part of darkness instead of bringing light
to my friends and coworkers.
Self-pity makes us think about ourselves instead of the other person. I've
been challenging myself to forget about me. To sincerely act out the
Golden Rule; I always learned it as "Do unto others as you would have them
do unto you."
Matthew 7:12 (NLT)
is the scripture that tells us that this idea is the basis of the Old
Testament teachings.
An email that is "going around" contains
Charles Plumb's Parachute Story
. This Vietnam War veteran tells a touching story of meeting the
man whose dedication to his job saved Charles' life. It is said that
we are only three people away from every other person in the world. We
don't know how any little thing we do may affect someone else. Sometimes
it seems like such a little thing. Charles' story proves that every
action may be important. To locate more information about Charles
Plumb and his ministry, look up his name in any search engine.
So I leave you with this thought? Were you a light in your part
of the Kingdom today?
