(This is a work in progress. Please be patient. I
thought I would go ahead and post this because it is a current topic that
could be interesting to some of my readers.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A DISCIPLE?
Many churches today are on the discipleship bandwagon. They speak
of being disciples and discipling others. Bible Studies and Sunday Schools
are discussing this subject. One version of the Great Commission is
that we are to make disciples who make disciples who make disciples.
Some say that every believer is to be this last kind of disciple. That
we all are to go out and win others to Christ and teach them.
Others say that God made prophets, evangelists, teachers, etc. which
means that only some people are called to do these tasks. The rest
of the believers are to be the church congregation and don't have to go out
to the world to lead others to the Lord. Another point for this opinion
is that Mattew 29:19-20 was spoken to the apostles. Therefore, those
words didn't apply to the general populace but only to those who are specially
called to the office. If this is true, let's throw out all the words
that Christ said because he didn't speak them to us.
One friend who is a mother of several children recently pointed out that
her duties do not allow her to be going to the world. She questioned
if being a witness for Christ is the same as being a disciple.
One question I have is: Do we believe that the Bible is the Word
of God applicable to our lives today? If it isn't, then let's just
lead a good life and not worry about this subject. Who wants to be
Christ's Disciple anyway?
But if you believe that the Bible probably should have some influence on
us in the year 2003, let's confirm that with some scriptures.
Psalm 12:6-7 If we are to preserve these words forever, I assume
that means that we are to read them and learn some lessons from them.
