PRAYER: WHAT DOES IT INVOLVE?
(by Virginia H. Lane)
Is there more to prayer than sending words toward Heaven? Those
who believe in a higher power with whom one talks believe there is a lot
to prayer.
There are different types of prayer such as intercessory prayer, prayers
of thanksgiving, prayers of request, etc.
I recently read and reviewed Gregg Braden's Secrets of the Lost Mode
of Prayer. You may read my
Review
. While I don't necessarily agree with everything he said, I would
like to discuss something I got from my reading.
Braden's believed in and searched for 20 years for a forgotten form of
prayer. In speaking with an abbot at a monastery in Tibet, he
took note of the bells, gongs, mantras, etc. that were outward show. Braden
asked "what is happening to you in the inside."
"You have never seen our prayers, " he answered, "because a prayer cannot
be seen. Adjusting the heavy wool robes beneath his feet, the abbot
continued "what you ahve seen is what we do to create the feeling in our
bodies. Feeling is the prayer!"
For understanding of that concept, I'll leave you to read the book. However,
I'd like to address something I found significant.
What is feeling? In this context, it is all-consuming belief. Where
you know without a shadow of the doubt that God is alive and is active in
our lives
(Heb 11:6)
. This scripture says that he rewards those who seek him. While
we may not have everything just the way we want it, we can be assured that
we won't be able to outrun the blessings God wants to bestow upon us.
I'm not advocating an Eastern Ritual. Braden doesn't advocate that. However,
much of what he has to say goes right along with Biblical principles. I
especially like that he wants us to forgive others. He uses the term
"bless" as a forgiveness rather than condoning. This certainly goes
along with what Jesus said about love your enemies and bless those that curse
you .
(Matthew 5:44)
He also says you won't be forgiven if you don't forgive others.
(Matthew 6:15
)
Do you have all-consuming belief? I have to admit that often I have
doubt in my heart. Therefore, I propose that we all continue to seek such
a relationship with the Godhead that we "know that we know that we know."
