This word is not one that is frequently used in the Bible. Therefore,
we need to examine exactly what it is so we will understand this fruit.
At a Bible study I attended recently, the difference between happiness and
joy was discussed. Happiness is external. We are happy because
of things that are going on around us. Joy is internal. It is
a gladness that comes from within.
How many of you read Pollyanna when you were a child? I forgot to
look for my copy at Daddy's house last time I was in Lubbock. I wanted
to see what it said about the "rejoicing texts." Remember that Pollyanna
told the local pastor that her father counted all the times it says in the
Bible to "rejoice."
During a quick search I found the following scriptures:
Matthew 5:12 Rejoice and be glad for our reward is in Heaven Luke 15:6 Rejoice with me; for I have found my sheep which was
lost.
Rom 12:15 Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that
weep.
I suggest doing a word study of "rejoice." I was amazed at the variety
of scriptures telling one to rejoice. While maybe not exactly addressing
"me" in the original context, it still gives a good principle. Many
Old Testament scriptures give examples of times when people rejoiced.
This topic is by no means exhausted. I wish you well with your studies.
I will continue adding thoughts as I learn.
