SECRETS OF THE LOST MODE OF PRAYER by Gregg
Braden
(A Book Review by Virginia H. Lane)
Has a particular method (or mode) of prayer been lost? According
to Gregg Braden, author of Secrets of the Lost Mode of Prayer,
the
key to praying in a way that could change the world has been lost.
Gregg believes that information known to the ancients is available
today
through documents that have been discovered within the last few
centuries. (*author's note: Although he didn't say this, I assume
this knowledge was presumably kept from the common man an effort to
control the masses.) In research over 20 years, Braden found that
these secrets are still known and used
in secluded monasteries in Tibet. He shares what he has learned
in
Secrets of the Lost Mode of Prayer and other books he has
written.
Braden tells his story objectively, with information coming from a
variety of sources. He quotes the Gnostic Gospels as well as
other beliefs. He does not attempt to foist any religious bent upon the
reader but simply gives the information from which he came to his
understanding of prayer.
He gives examples of prayer from the perspective of many.
One insight given on the power of prayer is from Reverend Samuel
Shoemaker who "described the power of prayer to create change in a
single, poetic,
and perhaps deceptively simple sentence: 'Prayer may not change things
for
you, but it for sure changes you for things.'." (xvii)
I, Virginia, have to admit that I was curious when I found out
about this book. I checked it out of the library. As I
read, I was
able to relate the information to other things I've learned. I
have
done much research over the years. Different religions and
ministries
often say the same things but in different words. I may better
understand
what one has said by studying views of another. In this case, I
found
that Braden has a way of saying things that clarifies some of my other
studies.
For instance, Readers of the Bible are mystified by
I Thessalonians 5:17 which tells us to pray continuously.
That's certainly a challenge. Braden's premise about prayer
answers this question.
Braden believes that there are several aspects that lead up to prayer.
We must recognize the hurts within us and use wisdom. We
are
to forgive; his term is to bless. (Another insight on blessing
your
enemies,) We are to take time to see the beauty around us.
By
doing these things we tune into our Creator. Then we are ready
for
Prayer.
What is the lost mode of prayer? I don't want to spoil it by
telling you exactly what he says. One has to read the whole book
to comprehend. It's a fairly easy read. In some spots, one
has to re-read to get the meaning as Braden bogs down in verbiage.
However, on the whole, it's an easy read. It only took me
four hours during which time I
also took a nap when my eyes got tired.
If read with an open mind, the Secret of the Lost Mode of Prayer
can add to the reader's knowledge and understanding of Prayer.
Happy reading!
On Back Cover:
Could our deepest hurts reveal the key to a powerful form of prayer
that was lost 17 centuries ago? What can we learn today fro the
greatest secret of our most cherished traditions?
"THERE ARE BEAUTIFUL AND WILD FORCES WITHIN UP."
With these words, the mystic St. Francis described what ancient
traditions believed was the most powerful force in the universe--the
power of prayer. For more than 20 years, Gregg Braden has
searched for evidence of
a forgotten form of prayer that was lost to the west following the
biblical edicts of the early Christian Church. In the 1990s, he
found and documented this form of prayer still being used in the remote
monasteries of central Tibet. He also found it practiced in
sacred rites throughout the high deserts of the American Southwest.
In this book, Braden describes this ancient form of prayer that has no
words or outward expressions. Then, for the first time in print,
he
leads us on a journey exploring what our most intimate experiences tell
us about our deepest beliefs. Through case histories and personal
accounts, Braden explores the wisdom of these timeless secrets, and the
power
that awaits each of us...just beyond our deepest hurt!
