THE CASE FOR FAITH by Lee Strobel
(A Book Review by Virginia H. Lane)
What is Faith? Is it something real or is one deceiving themselves.
Journalist Lee Strobel asked some of the same questions after reading books
by Charles Templeton, a former friend of Billy Graham, who let his questions
change him from a believer to an opponent of Christianity.
In The Case for Faith: A Journalist Investigates the Toughest Objections
of Christianity, Lee Strobel tackles these questions:
If there's a loving God, why does this pain-wracked world groan under
so much suffering and evil?
If the miracles of God contradict science, then how can any rational
person believe that they're true?
If God really created the universe, why does the persuasive evidence
of science compel so many to conclude that the unguided process of evolution
accounts for life?
If God is morally pure, how can he sanction the slaughter of innocent
children as the Old Testament says he did?
If Jesus is the only way to heaven, then what about the millions of
people who have never heard of him?
If God cares about the people he created, how could he consign so
many of them in an eternity of torture in hell just because they didn't believe
the right things about him?
If God is the ultimate overseer of the church, why has it been rife
with hypocrisy and brutality throughout the ages.
If I'm still plagues by doubts, then is it still possible to be a
Christian?
Strobel showed the historical evidence for the life, death and resurrection
of Jesus Christ in The Case for Christ. In this book he resolved
"to determine if there are "soul-satisfying response when Christianity is
confronted with life's harshest and most perplexing questions that send nagging
doubts into our hearts and minds." He searched for and spoke with a
number of ardent defenders of Christianity--to see if they could provide rational
answers to these questions. Most of all, he believed he was in a search
relationship with God.
Each chapter ends with two short sections: Deliberations: Questions
for Reflection or Group Study and For Further Evidence: More Resources
on this Topic. The former gives the reader the chance to reflect on
the information presented in the chapter while the latter challenges one to
study further.
The last chapter gives conclusions by proposing three directions of thought.
#1 Find Perspective: "I had examined each obstacle on its own merits, interviewing
experts who were able to provide satisfying explanations and analysis.
The I evaluated each of the objections in the context of the convincing evidence
that Christianity is true and that therefore God is ultimately trustworthy
and loves us deeply. ...After spending a year investigating "The Big Eight"
objections, I remained utterly convinced that the most rational and logical
step people can take is to invest their faith in Jesus of Nazareth."
(p. 253)
#2 Making a Choice: "Ultimately, though faith isn't about having perfect
and complete answers to every single one of 'The Big Eight' objections.
After all, we don't demand that level of conclusive proof in an other area
of life. The point is that we certainly do have sufficient evidence about
God upon which to act. And in the end, that's the issue. Faith
is about a choice, a step of will. It's saying 'I believe--please help
my unbelief'." (p. 253)
#3 Changing a Life: Strobel tells the story of William Neal Moore, a confessed
murderer, who came to know Jesus and shared with others on death row.
People saw the change in his life. Just hours before his life was to
end, the courts issued a stay of execution. It was said that he was
not the same man who had been sent to prison. Moore attributed the change
in him to Jesus.
Strobel investigates questions and comes to these conclusions. That
Jesus is very real and because of knowing Him, one can exercise Faith.
I, Virginia, cannot begin to tell you about all the information presented
in this book. Strobel did say that his investigation caused his faith
to strengthen even without having complete answers. I say that is a
good testimony.
Previous to The Case for Faith, Strobel wrote The Case for Chris
t in which he investigates the claims that Jesus is the son of God.
Additionally, he has written The Case for Easter; see my
Review of The Case for Easter
.
If you are questioning the reality, identity and deity of Jesus, I highly
recommend any and all of these books by Lee Strobel. Happy reading!!

The back cover of the book says:
Was God telling the truth when he said, "You will seek me and find me when
you seek me with all your heart?"
In his #1 best-seller The Case for Christ, legally trained investigative
reporter Lee Strobel examines the claims of Christ, reaching the hard-won
verdict that Jesus is God's unique son.
But despite the compelling historical evidence that Strobel presented ,
many people grapple with serious concerns about faith in God. As in
a court of law, they want to shout, "Objection!" They say, "If God
is love, then what about all the suffering in our world?" Or, "If God
cares for everyone, then why does he eternally torture some in hell?"
In The Case for Faith, Strobel turns his tenacious investigative
skills to the most persistent emotional objections to belief--the eight "heart"
barriers to faith. The Case for Faith is for those who may be
feeling attracted to Jesus but who are faced with intellectual barriers standing
squarely in their path. For Christians, it will deepen their convictions
and give them fresh confidence in discussing Christianity with even their
most skeptical friends.
--------------
"Everyone--seekers, doubters, fervent believers--benefits when Lee Strobel
hits the road in search of answers, as he does again in The Case for Faith
. In the course of his probing interviews, some of the toughest intellectual
obstacles to faith fall away."
--Luis Palau
"With intellectual depth and honest, Lee Strobel investigates, then nullifies,
the toughest arguments against Christianity. A perfect book for the
intellectual, the doubter and the inquisitive. A great Faith builder."
-- Bill Bright, founder and President, Campus Crusade for Christ International
