THE BATTLE BELONGS TO THE LORD by Joyce Meyer
(A Book Review by Virginia H. Lane)
When I was loaned a copy of The Battle Belongs to the
Lord by my neighbor, I didn't know what to expect. I had only
seen Joyce Meyer on television a couple of times. Through reading
this book, I learned about her life's experiences and how they made her
into the woman she is today. The subtitle of this book is Overcoming
Life's Struggles through Worship. This intrigued me as I've grown
up feeling overwhelmed by life and have wanted to overcome my fears. Joyce
clearly lays it on the line that we can overcome obstacles only with God's
help. Worship is the main way in which we build a relationship with
God. When we worship, he knows that we are lovingly looking to him
as our source.
What is Worship? Worship is focusing on God instead of our fears.
Using the Old Testament, Joyce gives examples of how the Lord works
once we admit our dependence upon Him and once taking a position of trust,
then the Lord brings deliverance. We need to "tune into God;" He
will talk to us if we are tuned in. Joyce discusses the ways in which
a person hears from God.
Worship is often thought of as time period when music is playing at church.
It's not the music itself but what happens during this time. Music
is one avenue for focusing on God. The important part is our attitude
of mind. Joyce covers a variety of ways to praise and worship God
with and without music. Our attitude should be one of worship and
adoration, seeking God at all times. Worship should not be restricted
to just certain times of the day or week such as church time.
Joyce shows us from the Bible what it really means to fear God--and the
blessings that come from doing so. Fearing God isn't being afraid of
him. It's following His way because we love him. God is like
a loving parent that wants the best for us. It's reciprocal; we love
Him and He loves us. Joyce clearly demonstrates from the Bible and
with personal testimonies what it means to put our trust in Him. By
worshipping Him and learning to fear Him in the proper way , then fear of
other things diminish and depart. The Bible Belongs to the Lord
is an inspiring and encouraging book, helping the reader to see why and
how to worship God and the results of doing so.
